Murray McMurray statement on Avian cases...

Just posted this in the Avian Influenza Thread..I am at a loss right now.
This is devastating! I can't imagine. They did say it was their largest barn. I can't imagine being forced to put down birds that weren't exhibiting signs of illness. Lock the barn down, don't sell eggs, whatever, but not to euthanize them all. So sad :(

Lock the barn down, don't sell eggs, whatever, but not to euthanize them all.

Unless you want the birds to starve, or die of dehydration, someone would have to go in and out to tend them. Whoever tends the birds could spread the disease to other birds in other places. I don't think it would be practical to lock the barn down with a person inside who tends the birds but never comes out, for a long enough time to get any survivors over the disease.

Also, for as deadly as this apparently is, the birds would probably all die anyway-- so culling them before they show symptoms may save them suffering, as compared with waiting for them to show symptoms and then culling them.

My order is supposed to ship on 18 April. Half of my order will not be shipped (Cuckoo Marans). No one from Murray McMurray has called me. Are they supposed to?

Did you get an email? There’s a response form to fill out with choices either
-log into your account and make changes if you want to add birds or change ship date
-you can call them at the 800 number
-do web chat with a representative
-text them at the provided number
Or you can:
Fill out a response form where you can request a representative call you, cancel your order, postpone your order til 2023.

I got my email on April 5th. Since your order is so close, I would probably call or do a web chat on Monday, or text them today, or login and make a few additions if you want them (looks like Easter Eggers, Andalusians, Columbian Wyandottes, White Rocks, Brown Leghorns, and a few Sex Link breeds pullets are still available to add if you are interested in any of them).

The rep I spoke to told me shipping would be free even though I dropped below 15 birds (lost my Cuckoos, White Orpingtons, and Sussex). I made additions up to 13 just so there would be more birds shipping together which I figured would be safer and because I wanted at least 10 chicks so in case I lose any in shipment.

I hope this helps, please update with what you decide to do!

Gotta wonder how many other main chick sellers are affected in this too but have not said anything?

Can’t really hide that info. High mortality to chickens with this HPAI. Govt posts new occurrences. If you have no birds, can’t ship any, so at the very least…money would need to be refunded.

Let me report some great news! First, today, Murray McMurray sent my entire order, even though in their email they stated that the Cuckoo Marans and Buff Golden Polish would NOT be coming. So, hats off to Murray McMurray! Second, we have two hens (Louise - a Cuckoo Marans, and Clara - a Speckled Sussex) who are currently sitting but we keep taking their eggs away from them because we can't control the sex of the hatchlings. Anyway, my wife and I thought we would see if they would be a surrogate for the unexpected arrivals. Well, Louise, Cuckoo Marans wanted no part of the chicks but Clara just took over and gathered up all 17 and -poof- instant motherhood! Very proud of her, and the next order with Murray McMurray will definitely include several Speckled Sussex.
