I was looking at chicks today and I would like to have more hens than roosters. They only had males in the most desirable breeds. When is the best availibility time for them?

I may just be too late in the season...

Give them a call they know when they should have availability. There may be cancellations of orders and you may get moved ahead, I bought from Ideal several different breeds and the delivery was delayed by a week because there were not enough of one hatching to send mine out on the scheduled date. but that was ok I got all that I ordered + 6 little guys I didn't order I now have a Rooster I hadn't planned on and it has worked out very well we have baby chickies out of our girls we recieved last November. I ordered mine in November for a February delivery. I think that is when you can start making orders.

I have been very happy with my McMurray chicks but I can't vouch for egg color in the Marans yet. The EE'rs are laying light olive and light blue...so far.

Get them vaccinated!!

You are pretty late season. I placed my order in January and ended up Memorial day with first availability. They are busy for a reason.

They have a few breeds available now. I was late also as I had relied on a local breeder to get me birds and when I contacted her about their readiness I was informed that she didn't have what I had ordered but had something else. I took those, which were unsexed Australorps at 8 weeks old , and then went to the McMurray site which only had straight runs and males left, this being in late May.

I ended up getting a straight run from another hatchery, again because all female orders were booked everywhere I looked for the heritage breeds I wanted. I will now have a bunch of roos to unload.

I have recently ordered sexed runs from McMurray which are due August 17th, but there were only a couple of the breeds I was interested in available.

I think if you order in the Fall, you should have a pretty good selection.

You can also get various grab bag selections now if you are not particular.
