Ok so I have a muscovy hen...no drake I read on another site somewhere that if the muscovy duck has been mated by a drake of her own breed she won't allow a drake of another breed mate her is that true? Also if I do get a drake and she goes broody will she sit on eggs that are from duck hens of other breeds? I didn't think the duck would care but I was doing an internet search and read that a muscovy will only set her own eggs?

Is it true they are good mothers? Thanks

I also have a question about Muscovy egg laying. My girl is 6 and a half months old. Our Pekin just started laying this week but still nothing from the Muscovy. She does free range during the day but I've searched high and low and haven't found any eggs.

My hens will let any of my drakes mate them, i dont knwo about different breeds but i don't think they care, they can pick favorites though.

One of my hens went broody on chicken eggs and another on wooden eggs so they also arent picky there. I even had a hen that lost her clutch of eggs and i replaced them and she continued to set on them. They make AMAZING mothers!

My hens stopped laying in november & began again in January so in my opinion they are pretty decent layers, mine anyway.

I have a few younger hens that are about 6 months and they just started to get their "egg pouches" so they should start soon. Does your girl have a saggy belly yet, suburbanduckmom?

Well, based on the mating style of my Muscovy pair, I don't think the poor girl would have a choice of who mated with her. The other day I was about ready to call the cops on my male! LOL! He was on top of my female, pulling her head violently up and down, being rough. She didn't seem happy, but I figured it was rude to stare.

Anyhow, I'm hoping to find out soon just how good of a mother they can be.

Muscovy ducks will set on their own eggs, another birds eggs, walnuts, rocks, anything that is somewhat egg shaped. They are usually very good moms.

Muscovies are genetically different than any of the other usual backyard ducks. They will mate with the other ducks, but any resulting ducklings will be sterile.

Muscovy ducks are very good at hiding their nests. If they have a chance to free range at all, not seeing eggs does not mean eggs do not exist - somewhere.

So if the duck got used to laying in one certain area she wouldnt continue to lay there? All my other ducks lay in the same place everday....

get a drake cuz they are cute and funny!!!! that's my excuse!! lol for example, i love watching my drake AFTER they mate cuz he puts his mohawk up and walks around my bedroom hissing like he's "the man" it's sooo funny!!! i love him. plus when i rub his bill, he falls asleep in my hand. <3 and he's funny cuz he's too big for his own good. poor boy tries to fly into his pen (the have a childrens play pen in my room) and he crashes in there lol. and he thumps around my room with his big feet lol.

you should get one!!!!

We must have the same guy! Mine gets all full of himself after mating as well. And I think he invented the term "Faceplant" LOL! He likes to fly up on top of the coop - maybe 3 1/2' high at most - and he sits there and sort of rocks back and forth, acts like he's gonna do it, then sort of loses confidence. Then he'll start up again and eventually will almost have a coronary on the way. :) But he does it.
