Hi all!

OK.... found me a breeder near me. She is cool even to sell me some hen for only $6.00. I just want to how to care for them. I know a little. I live in KY and wants to know how they will winter here? Tips to help them?

Also what do I need to do when they have ducklings?

Never have kept ducks...so any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you

Unmedicated chick starter, waterfowl or duck starter for ducklings.
Unmedicated grower/finisher for adults. You can feed layer rations when they start laying.
You can also feed Flock Raiser or All Flock but should cut the protein when they are older with oats, wheat, millet etc.
At about 1-2 months old aim for 16-18% protein in feed.
Greens, veggies, fruits etc. Look in the stickies for a thread of duck safe treats.

A bowl or bucket deep enough that they can get their heads in is mandatory. Water must be available at all times if feed is available.

Safe and secure nighttime housing. Muscovy can fly. Minimum 4' fencing because they can climb too.

If you get harsh, freezing winters, a secure, draft free house will be fine. Just like chickens, they still need adequate ventilation. Muscovy perch like chickens also. You don't have to provide perches but my females roost with the chickens.

A kiddie pool will help them remain clean and will make them happy. Dump it every day or two in this weather. It does not need to be out constantly but they do enjoy it. In the winter, fill it up a few times a week and dump it if it will freeze in the evening.

Muscovy are typically very good mothers. So, when they start laying and go broody just let them have at it. At 2 days old, make sure that there are duckling size food and water dishes. You will need to see if the drake and other hens are okay with new babies. Some are, some aren't. A mom and her brood may need to be seperated.

Good luck. Post pics once they arrive.

Thank you Judy.

You're very helpful, straight to the point! I will post their picture when they get here. The lady is going on vacation and said when she gets back I can come and get them.

They are last summers hatch and had started laying this spring. Is that a good age? How many years will they lay, before the laying starts to decline?

Thanks again
Thai
