My Muscovy drake (Emmett) on his caruncles right above his bill has been yellow and gross looking. I think it's frostbite but I just wanted to see if that is what it is and if there's anything else I can do for it besides putting down way more straw. I've also been putting vasoline on it daily, sometimes more than once a day. Also if it will once it gets warm again get that bright red again. It's also been in the negatives constantly where I'm at and I don't have the ability to put a heat lamp in his coop.
This is a photo from early this year (sorry that you might have to zoom in)

And here's one from tonight.

@HarmonyEostre it is frost bite, but there's really nothing you can do. The knob will fall off and grow back.
Vaseline is not recommended as it's best to leave it alone. My drake has gotten it most winters with plenty of straw provided and proper ventilation. This year he hasn't gotten it, but I think it's because he's learned to tuck his head in his wing. 😊

Same here my Muscovy drake has had it and really there isn't much you can do. The skin will heal but it will always be susceptible to tearing easy or that is the way it is here. My drake got it most likely from dipping his head into heated buckets and then out into the frigid temps. One of my Muscovy females got it too. That is how I knew the skin tears easily she opened hers up on hardware cloth.

Okay thank you! And that's so weird everywhere I was reading it was saying vasoline would act like a second layer to protect it.

Thank you so much and I'll keep it in mind to keep him away from pointed objects.😊

I went out this morning and 2 of my drakes have signs of frostbite on their caruncle knob. I check them everyday, so very interesting to see that it developed so quickly. I thought we might bypass it this year, but apparently not. The 2 that have it have the biggest caruncles and my 3rd drake has not developed frostbite yet. Here I thought my oldest drake was doing better and tucking his head under his wing. 😆
