Muscovy duck egg day 29... Pipped Internally!

Ughm, i have a question, i removed the remaining shell and membrane and the duckling still rests and sleeps, is that normal? It just breathes and lies on the aluminum flooring of the incubator.... And its eyes is closed, so i assume it is sleeping but when it chirps, it wiggles a little and then open its eyes tthen sleep again... IS THAT NORMAL? @LynnaePB

I'm not sure about ducks since I haven't hatched them just quail and chickens but that does sound pretty normal to me, the hatching process can really wear them out. I've had chicken chicks be pretty tuckered out and a few who had a little difficulty hatching went around 1-2 days before really perking up. I gave those ones some electrolytes in their water to help them.

Hopefully someone with more experience with ducklings will help answer, oh and congratulations on the baby hatching!!! :)

The yolk that he absorbed should sustain him for at least 2 days. My chicken chicks very rarely really want to start eating and drinking before they are 12 hours old, usually by 24 hours they get an appetite and start eating and drinking. Chicks I've had that got really tired from hatching went up to 2 days before they tried eating or drinking, those are the ones I gave the electrolytes to which seemed to help, and they did seem to appreciate it (I'd wait at least 12 hours until you try to give him anything though, some would probably wait longer maybe up to a couple days but I did think the electrolytes helped my exhausted chicks).

Good luck, I hope your little one gets some good rest and perks up in a little while!

It won't eat for a day or so like @LynnaePB stated. Also hatching for waterfowl is a major ordeal "even more so for yours". They are large eggs with thick shells. Its not at all uncommon for them to sleep/rest for 24 hours or more before moving around much.
