Muscovy duck/egg questions

Actually, I've had my Muscovies go as long as 37 1/2 days! If she's sitting, they are probably fertile.

I had one duck once that would actually roll the seeping eggs out of the nest! Of course, she still managed to hatch like 20-something ducklings!

I will remember that time so I don't give up too early.

I see you have a want for Chocolate Muscovies. My male is a brown color. We got an assorted lot of them so I think he is a chocolate. Anyway I only have 4 hens and they are white and white with a patch of black on two of their heads. One is white with a light gray color on her back. I call her the seagull colored one.

I did have two black and white males but I recently gave them away. There was too much fighting going on. And I like the color of the brown drake so much better. I am hoping to get that color going more in my flock and eventually do away with the white colors.

He is so much cleaner than the other two were. He takes a bath every day and of course not having white on him he doesn't show the dirt.

If you look at my blog under my signature I have posted a picture of the brown drake. It isn't very close up, but you can see his color.

Cool, I’ll check him out!

Guess what? Our Buff Orpington chicken hatched out 6 Muscovy ducklings yesterday! She is such a good mama and is taking good care of her adopted babies. The Muscovy hen's eggs are hatching right now as I type. Then we have one more Muscovy hen setting on another clutch of eggs. She is about 2 weeks behind this batch.

I will take pictures later today and show my cute little fuzzy babies off.

You can candle the eggs about 5-10 days in and tell if they're fertile!

I've always heard that they'll be able to go about 5-7 days without a drake and still be able to lay fertilized eggs but I don't know that is a scientific fact. I have one pen sharing a drake and I try to move him every 3-5 days.

We have no doubt now they were fertile!

Our Muscovy hen hatched out all but one egg. And it had a little bill sticking out of it, but the duckling must have died before he could get out of the shell. So that is a pretty good ratio I think.

We now have a total of 20 ducklings! And the mama duck stole the Buff's 6 ducklings. So she is caring for all of them now.

And our othere duck is sitting on 24 eggs. I don't think she can take care of that many if they all hatch can she? The hen that has 20 is having a hard time getting them all under her wings. We did put a heat lamp out there for them.
