My remaining hen sat for over 2 weeks on one egg that she laid shortly after my other hen died. I didn't have the heart to take it (thinking perhaps the odds were not good) because I saw her as consoling herself (perhaps anthropomorphizing or maybe just I needed the consoling), regardless of whether the egg was viable. I did candle it during that time (and again after she abandoned it) and it seemed quite viable and matched the Metzer chart. I was hopeful because one hen and one drake are not good odds and was thinking perhaps a duckling would be good regardless of this late time of year here in southern NH.
I have no idea why she abandoned it and wrecked the perfect nest and wonder any thoughts of others who have had a similar experience.

There could be a couple of reasons. One, sometimes they know what's inside died. Or, it could be, she's suffering the loss of the other one. I have heard most say when a bird dies or is removed, the other members of the flock usually don't seem to have a clue, yet others will seem despondent for weeks after their buddy is gone.

Yes, I think perhaps that's right. They both seem out of sorts a bit but especially the lone hen. I have tried but cannot find another hen (or 2 ) to take the dead hen's place. I may have to wait until spring and pray (for the drake's sake) that this girl makes it.
