Muscovy hen trying again

I know you have better things to do than read my epistles, but... :) You know, I told you that Mama rolled 3 of her eggs out to me while I was sitting with her. Well, turns out my game camera that I forgot about was on, and I have a picture of her pushing the eggs out. What are the odds?? Anyway, I finally bit the bullet and made the decision to try putting her babies with her and the 4 eggs. She looked stunned but pleased. She looked at them for a second, sniffed them a little and shoved them right under her. I wish we weren't expecting severe weather today and that I had a more secure place for her, but hopefully, all will be fine. Still can't get pictures to load :(

I have been waiting to hear from you, and am enjoying this great turn of events. and now mama has taken her babies back that is just so special. How about the last 4 eggs any news on them? and have to been to this link it walks you through the steps to uoload pics to the forum https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/inserting-pics-in-on-the-new-byc

Hi Miss Lydia, Apparently, I just can't post pictures from my phone. It worked just fine from my computer. Thanks to you and this forum, almost 50% of the eggs are now ducklings :) Out of 12 eggs, I knew 3 of them never got started and 1 quit early on, so out of the 8, I have 4 ducklings... 2 from yesterday and 2 from today. Yea, but I'm exhausted! Sure hope Mama is as excited to see the 2 new ones as she was to see yesterday's hatch. Do you do chickens, too??

Chicks are due on the 16th and Mallards on the 22nd. I don't anticipate any participation in those hatchings, but I'm not making any promises

I just can't say thank you enough! Without y'all, there would be no babies AGAIN!

That is so adorable, and I am so happy for you, Congratulations and it is a great hatch when you get ducklings so 4 is great!!! I hope mama will accept them too please keep me updated on progress and I want to see these lil ones as they grown and color up. I can tell already they are going to be gorgeous. And I hope you won't have to participate in any more hatching, although you are a pro now

Hi, We had a good day! Mama loves her babies, and she trusts me with them. I'm so excited. They still haven't eaten, but hopefully tomorrow. I don't know about duck genetics, but both Muscovies are black. We also have a male Pekin. With all the yellow, don't you think I probably have some hinnies?

Thanks for the update, glad they are doing well and mama loves them, both mamas

could be you may have some Pekin/Scovie in the mix, but on colors it's hard to say, I got a barred out of my ducks last year and I don't have a barred in the group, so I'm thinking someones grandpap or granma or even further back. time will tell. Does it matter? Look for the bean tip at the end of the bill as they grow, only Scovies have it. and please update with pics as they grow too.

Awe, thanks so much, and I will post pictures :) And you're right, it doesn't matter to me about the hinnies... Might even be preferred since they can't reproduce. I do feel kinda guilty that I traded my only remaining male Muscovy to get a female Pekin for my lonesome male, Dennis the Menace, but maybe Mama will be too busy with babies for a while to notice. I had to send one male to another farm because he was brutally sexually aggressive :( I'm pretty sure he killed my only other female Muscovy, but I miss the one I traded. My son is suppose to build a duck pen/run for me, so maybe Mama and babies will get some fresh air this afternoon. Will Mama show babies her food and water since I can't let them out right to forage?

Ijust found this thread, and it has been interesting since I have a first time broody muscovy setting on eggs, and today is day 37. She is rather protective and I am letting nature take it's course.

Anyway, I bought chick starter and plan to offer it to mother and babies. I found a non medicated one--seem to remember ducks can't have the medicated one.
