Muscovy hen trying again

Good luck, Danielnv. I let my hen go to day 39 the first time, and she abandoned them that night after I went home.. Found them ice cold on day 40. I made up my mind right then that I would do things differently if she tried again. I figured anything better than a 100% loss was an improvement. But like Miss Lydia said, if you decide to assist, you're in it for the long haul. I was at it for at least 29 hours. Hope you have babies soon.

Ijust found this thread, and it has been interesting since I have a first time broody muscovy setting on eggs, and today is day 37. She is rather protective and I am letting nature take it's course.

Anyway, I bought chick starter and plan to offer it to mother and babies. I found a non medicated one--seem to remember ducks can't have the medicated one.
Good for you, maybe you'll wake up tomorrow to ducklings.

and yep I fed chick starter to my mamas and babies. or actually i did, then I found out that Purina Flock Raiser can be fed from hatch on so I went to it, that way I don't have to keep the rest of the flock out of the chick starter, their all big babies when it comes to food. Keep us updated on progress.

Hope you have had a chance to get some much needed rest, and how are mama and babies doing?

Babies walked right into their heated swimming pool Saturday :) I forgot how much fun they were to watch, and I've never had a mama before. It's really entertaining watching her trying to watch them all when they all run different directions.

That is so adorable.

Ducklings are doing well. They, along with Mama, have been moved to my horse trailer :) All 9 chicks hatched a day early, and I only had to assist with one. Had to take 2 of them home with me because Mama was pecking them. I guess because they were a little later hatching, but once they dried and fluffed, Mama liked them just fine. Now, all 12 Mallard eggs have pipped 3 days early. I know there's at least one baby under there, but Mom won't stand up so I can see what else is going on :/

It's hard to say for sure, but the best I can tell, all 12 Mallard babies have arrived on day 26 and appear to be doing well. It was 83 degrees yesterday and today's high was last night's low, and it's suppose to drop to 35 tonight. Nearly a 50 degree difference and Mama has 12 babies to keep warm. She's got her work cut out for her :) Hope to be able to post pictures when I get home. It's been an exciting baby week with 3 muscovies, 9 chicks, and 12 mallards. Not only were the chicks and mallards early (with a 100% success rate :D), I found out my first grandchild will be coming at least 2-3 weeks early :) Whew!
