thanks for the reply, have another thread open were we were discussing the possibility of a suspended coop,we thought this would be beneficial to keep them out of the reach of foxes (only real threat to chickens in the uk) we decided that i would keep the new muscovys in the coop for about a week maybe 2 so they imprint that as their home then start letting the out about a hour before dark and feeding inside the coop, every week or so i would raise the coop bout a foot at a time until they are no longer able to get into it due to its high but i thought i would ask someone who has owned muscovys how high do you think that i would be able to get the coop into the air before it was to high a roost for them?

Depends.I really want some runner ducks so I have yet to email the hatchery about this but I wanted to get some runners & some Muscovies for my drakes the hatchery sells sexed ducklings.I really prefer getting birds from reputable sources.I am very paranoid of diseases I have dealt with minor ones & don't want to get the big scary ones :oops: I am so very busy right now though ducklings are not the best idea since I have the incubator going to. Sigh. Getting to adult ducks would make my job easiest but I really like raising them from a few days old so I get to watch them grow.

I can't see that working first off most drakes would have a hard time getting to it unless it was about a foot off the ground once they get adults they are too heavy to get very high and most likely would be left on the ground. The girls may try it but I have a feeling you'd end up with all ducks grounded. or the girls would just roost in the trees. Why can't you just put a door on the coop and lock them in at night make sure ol Mr Fox can dig in or climb in and they would be safe. he'll come around in the day light too. If you want them to roost make roosts inside their house with 2X4 this is what I use for roosts in my chicken house. i do want to mention before I actually brought my Muscovy drakes home from the river[ they were dumped there] They would fly they were on the lean side being in the wild, but once I got them home and fed well they didn't fly any more I think they just got to heavy although not over weight just too heavy. It was such a sight to see these drakes flying right above the river then land in the water. Never once say either one land in a tree, although the female that was with them at the beginning did. She was killed before i adopted them.
