I love this thread. I want to add pictures of mine but the new system wont let me . Last weekend i brought a muscovy duck with 11 babies. Im wondering what the are like as in temprement? There has been a lot of controversy as to whether theyre friendly or vicious and a nusance. I cant really tell with mine as the duck is extreamly protective of her young. I am also finding it difficult to figure out coulours - i know it would be much easier with pictures! - but could you please post some pictures of young blck and brown ducklings so i have an idea? At what age would i know the sex too and how do i identify? thanks!

I can tell you from experience Muscovies are awesome, they are friendly and very mellow[unless they have ducklings] as you have found out, they are great mothers and wonderful broodies. usually around 4 weeks you should be able to start telling boys from girls, boys will start to get larger and have thicker legs. having a group of 11 you shouldn't have any problems telling sex pretty early. There is a site on Google called Muscovy central which shows colors. Sorry you can't add pics, we'd love to see them. They also wag their tails, and a way to a muscovies heart is through their tummies, mine love frozen peas thawed and dried meal worms.

Got kind of a color question... My black pied drake is getting more and more white in his face and neck. I threatened to change his name to Michael if he didnt stop changing colors

I also just realized I have a lot of pied birds around here... Oh well. Anyway, my questions were : why is he changing colors? Will it stop eventually? and what will he look like when hes done with all these color mutations?

Just want to share something I found amusing..

At the back door this morning the puppy and her mom where barking alot! I thought my Dad needed to be let in.. Here the puppy and her mom where startled by the new male scovie I had brought home. He was just stareing in.. And later behind the house my Dad has a window that he has leaning and the new scovie found it.... So I was watching what he was doing.. Here he would get all riled up and start making that hissing noise and get his little mohawk going on and I guess he thought his reflection was another scovie!! He would start bobbing his head and pecking at the window!

He then did it with the one aquarium that I have outside and the back door's window! He would just get so mad at the reflection and he gets so loud! Its like a loud breathing sound somewhat like a hiss but with out the s sound in it. So amusing!

Here is my Muscovy boy D'Artagnan.
He was an unplanned duck - my son calls him my bonus duck.
After we received our 3 Khaki-Campbell's 2 India Runners, and one Pekin - all ducks - in mid March we were set. Then in late May I got a phone call form my son's teacher. They had found a lone duckling in the school garden, and after watching it for over an hour determined there were no parents. To this day no other duck has been seen there, and we have no idea how this guy showed up. My son mentioned we kept ducks, and after being unable to get a sanctuary to take it they called me. I walked down and picked him up, totally unaware of what sex, or kind of duck he would turn out to be. We raised him by himself, as the others had just gone outside.
He is very affectionate. Eventually it became obvious - from the claws - that he was a Msucovy. Recently it became obvious he was male, first from the hissing, then from the rising crest, and now from the near constant mating.... sigh, some unplanned conversations with my son from that. The first time he saw Dartie on top of Sonia the Pekin he ran outside yelling, "Dartie get ahold of yourself." I swore I would never have a muscovy or a drake, but.... here he is, and he's so sweet, and he comes running when any of us come outside. He is such a sweet boy.

Well, ML I am still hoping to unload some.. my feed bill is becoming insane! besides, i don't have enough girls.. so next year will be an utter disaster if i don't. Mind you i may have to create a boys only area.. they are so sweet, i want good homes for them.
