Five dozen eggs in the fridge now, two hens brooding, other hens making nests all over the place, and this morning PADRE, THE DRAKE was sitting in one nest, wiggling around to deepen it, pulling straw around with his bill, while one of his youngest daughters stood watching about three inches away, moving straw around ineffectually, obviously a beginner who isn't sure what to do. I was fascinated... I've never seen or heard of any such behavior from a drake. Then he got up and waddled out the door, crest up, wagging his tail, and his daughter sat down in the nest....!
Move over, Diane Fossey and Jane Goodall. Or pull up a chair.
