Hi guys. I am in need of a bit of advice. .... my ducks are feathering out currently (5 months) and I have one male that literally rips the other ducks new feathers out n eats them. They are on a 20% duck/ geese/ turkey feed... and get mealworms tossed in... as well as random greens daily. .. I have multiple food stations and water. .. I am not sure how to stop it. I separated him for a bit but he still picks at them until bleeding. Thoughts?
Mine do that!!!!!! but mine were born in august and already feathered ( mine just tend to feather quicker :/) But anyway several things can be used, put some baby powder on them, ( maker sure it doesn't get in their eyes) or cornstarch. if that doesn't work a more harsh way is to spray them with the hose with the nozzle on jet, ( i really hate doing that but it works :( ) and lastly separate them when all else fails

He has a serious meltdown when separated. So I currently have him in a larger cat carrier pointed at the flock. I wonder if he will stop once they have their feathers in.
Mine haven't stopped, they have adult feathers now and are learning to fly, and they still pick them out :(, they won't stop until they all learn to fight back... which takes awhile. what you need to do is make room for him somewhere inside, particularly the garage, and just put a sheet over the little pen/ cage you'll keep him in for about a week or to. that might work, i mean i did it, and they stopped for a while but then they started doing it again. But the only problem with that is to make sure the cage is big enough and changing the water bout three times a day

I'd get some Blue Kote, very in expensive at TSC spray their feathers they may not look so pretty right now but the purple color will disguise the feathers and my just break the habit, it's a good product to use on injuries because it covers the wound and keeps other members of the flock from picking on the wound so it may just keep the drake from pulling out feathers. be worth a try. FYI Blue Kote stains so wear gloves and old clothes when using. My ducks had some of her new wing feathers pulled out last week and she was bleeding my drake started picking on her where she was bleeding, I sprayed the Blue kote on her wing and he immediately stopped picking on her wing.

Thanks miss lydia :)
