I've been lurking and scanning through this thread for a couple of days ;-) I currently have 11 Muscovies that I bought in July. These are my first scovies so I am trying to learn the colors. Out of 11 I think I probably have 5 ducks and 6 drakes. Some of the drakes have developed 'angel wing' (which if you know anything about the cause I would like to know I'm not finding much info on that). I will probably keep 3 or four of the drakes and all the ducks.
In the meantime I would like to know what to call these colors
This is duck #1
Duck #2
They are close to the same shade of grey, just the sun makes them look more different than they are
Duck #3
Duck #4
Duck #5
she was in the shade, I will try and get a better pic of her another day. I love the look of her breast feathers
Drake #1 he has the same markings on his breast as the last duck
Drake #2 is the biggest one; he's really huge; I'm going to have to buy a hanging scale so I can put him in a bucket to weigh him.
Drake #3 matches ducks #3 & 4
Anyway I would like to get some idea of what to call these different colors and also the genetic possibilities when they are bred together. I really love the looks of the chocolates I've seen on here and would like to get some of them too! I searched for several months for someone selling scovies as I wanted them for meat. Now that I have them I am really enjoying them. The drakes are still growing out feathers as you can see. Some of the ducks were pulling the drakes feathers out, even making them bleed; I am feeding turkey/gamebird grower along with sprouted grains, greens and such; wonder why the feather pulling? I have those ducks seperated now though.
Hi maryhysong, Yes, the first two pic'd are blues, third may be buff. I still have trouble w/some of the color's as the cream, buff, silver confuse me at times. I would say #4 is a silver due to the grey legs & darker bill. #5 is a blue. The breast feathering will change once they go through their first adult molt... which should be pretty soon. Drake # 1 & 2 are black as you know and I'd say #3 is again Silver due to the grey legs. The silvers will be light blue/grey in feathering but don't be surprised if as the feathers age they turn a dirty light brown.I'm still trying to find out the names of these colors; any help would be appreciated. Are ducks 1 and 2 blue? I'm thinking drakes 1 and 2 are black, but duck 5 and drake 1 have like a lacy pattern on their breasts; is that what that pattern is called? lacey or rippled? And the lighter colored ones? they are mostly white, but 'dirty' looking over their heads and backs. Maybe they aren't even a real color?
Very pretty pic, and
So cute, our geese like to use the driveway for that purpose, our youngest drake was flying up to the top of the duck house in the evenings right when time to go to bed and would make me wait till dark when He decided to come down so I clipped his wing, now he can't get up there and i don't have to sit till dark waiting for His Highness to come down.

Hopefully, someone w/more color exp. can help you on the lighter colors. I know once they are in the sun and ageing those colors may get even more confusing...
Enjoy those Scovies!!!![]()
