We have 2 Muscovies that were nesting in the same room. Mo, the first mom, hatched out 12 babies and they kept running over to the other hens nest, whose name is Daisy . Daisy stayed on her nest for a couple days, and then, unfortunately, she abandoned it. We let her out of the room, and back into gen pop when we knew for sure she wasn't sitting anymore. We didn't want her to abandon her nest, and I take full responsibility for not moving the mom and new babies into a different coop/run immediately after they started coming out of the nest. Today, my old man went outside to get something, and heard a commotion in the coop. Mo, the scovy with new babies, was fighting with a 6 foot long black snake. He reached in and snatched the snake out of the nest. It had already swallowed and mostly digested one baby, and was about to eat the 2nd one, we think, right before Mo tried to stop it. During the scuffle with the snake and Mo and her babies, a couple of daisys eggs got kicked out of the nest. We thought they got busted open, but when I got a closer look at the eggs, there was little tiny tooth holes and it looked like tooth scratches on the outside of the shell. I'm assuming, a mouse or small snake tried to get the eggs.
. I hadn't really tried to think about daisys nest and the babies. When I saw the empty shells, and then what was in them, I lost it. There was blood in the shells, and it looks fresh. I am now wondering, if the eggs may still be good? I don't have an incubator, or we would've moved them as soon as she abandoned the nest. I feel horrible, I feel so bad for Daisy. I feel completely horrified and mortified about the babies.
. What do I do now? The eggs are cold, but it's been kinda hot here, like in the 80s during the day, and high 60s low 70s at night. Is there any chance at all, that any of these eggs are still alive? I'm sorry I even had to make this post. It seems so stupid now. I knew I should've moved them babies as soon as they hatched.
