Ive got mushrooms growing in my coop!!! Im not even kidding yesterday I had them all removed and this morning there is a 4 inch stall thick stocked mushroom in the coop with a huge head on it! I pulled it out it was super moist and got black stuff all over me. The stem was a creamy color and the head a gray color with black goo on the edges. The other day they were different. One morning last week I came out to the coop to find 2 dead chickens with no other signs or symptoms. Both were laying next to a little "bed" of mushrooms that had grown in their coop!! I think these things are gonna kill my birds if I can stop them! Its only in one coop! And thats the only coop Ive had any trouble in!

oh my gosh, I hope someone answers this-I had my chickens in the yard Monday, Tuesday I came home to a dead 12 wk BA and one that can't stand. I wonder if this may be the prob??

Chickie..looks like we are neighbors!

Many of these fungus type mushrooms popping up in your yard are indeed toxic to poultry. I live in holland where it is damp and this is a continual problem ... it is why I patrol my yard almost daily during such weather and have the inside of my coops kitted with plastic wall paneling (great for cleaning and keepng mites and lice at bay too!) and have a raised floor.
That this is happening on the inside of your coop is worrisome because it indicates that it is wayyyyy too damp... mycotoxins (aspergillosis) often appear in such.
Take measures to fix your coop... I suggest a cement floor if at all possible or at least a raised one... look for leaks ... but get the damp problem fixed is my advice.

Try googling "pictures poisonous mushrooms". There are pages upon pages of results. Hopefully you will be able to find the one growing in your coop. I am so sorry for your loss.

there are "wild" mushrooms that look almost exactly like the kind you buy in the store... my gramma would never eat even store mushrooms she was so deathly afraid of them as her brother (at young age) died after eating such. You should be EXTREMELY careful with "wild mushrooms"!!!

I lost a very expensive tortoise to a wild mushroom once. He was doing great one minute, dead the next. The only evidence was the mushroom itself, with scallop shaped bites taken out of the edge.

They say that box turtles, however, CAN eat wild mushrooms with no ill effects, even those that are toxic. And I read once where some historians attribute the vanishing of a certain Indian tribe to their own diet that included box turtle flesh - box turtles whose diet included toxic mushrooms. Therefore, I patrol our property for mushrooms CONSTANTLY so that nobody - feathered OR furred OR scaled - around here has a chance to eat them...

We have puffballs , white shrooms and morrels( they not toxic tho) in the area here.. So far so good .None of mine eat them.Knock on wood.

Can you move the coop to a different spot perhaps? or maybe scoop off the first layer of soil? to prevent spores to reproduce ?
