I was told they use food coloring to dye chicks.

Yes they are tiedied. I talked to the people that actually colored those birds and they said it was some sort of food coloring and they sprayed it on them with a spray bottle.
Usually breeders color the pet quality birds so people would buy them.
Easy way to sell birds And its kind of fun to...Then when somebody buys the bird they are getting a piece of your artwork.
