Today I was watching two ducks swimming in circles and diving so fast the others were scared and swam away. One gave up and a 3 mo old female-looking mallard was alone in the deep end. I saw her open her bill several times like she was quacking, but she never made a sound. Is she mute? I have never noticed since they are usually all together.

My ducks do this sometimes, too. I have no clue why they do it but they certainly aren't mute (they let me know when it's been more than ten minutes since their last treat, LOL)

Maybe she was yawning.

My ducks do that sometimes to. Does she make sounds at other times.

If the duck was in the water...my guess would be she had some water in her ears. Think about the last time you had a swim or were in an airplane...when the water gets in your ears- or a bit of pressure builds up...opening your mouth wide can help to be able to hear again.
