This is just a quick question. I have read a few posts from speckled and others about internal laying. I read some of the stuff about hatchery chicks and deformities or weakness. I already experienced bringing in sick chicks. Now I am just wondering is there a way to avoid all these issues that really come from over breeding. It really sounds so many issues are from the mass production and over breeding just like it was with dogs. So are mutt chickens less likely to have some of these genetic issues and maybe have a stronger constitution? Are there heritage breeds that are better additions to the flock than the popular breeds sold at the feed stores?

Crossbreeds in many species are stronger than purebreds. What you give up is the specific traits that a breed is developed for.
