Our neighbor has always let her chickens free range even at night. They are down to one rooster who lives over here most of the time and one hen. The hen lost her last batch of chicks to skunks and was setting on 5 more. They hatched a little over a week ago.
They heard her screaming about 4 yesterday morning and went out to find her dead along with one chick.
The put the rest in a pen outside.
I offered to brood them so they are now in my guest bedroom in the brooder.
They are little mutts but oh so cute. Their papa is a game rooster and very sweet. There mama was beigh with a dark brown saddle and head.
When I put them in the brooder they went right for the starter and ate too much. I went in to check on them and found a couple of them making chooking motions with the head and necks. I realized they had not drank. So I put them all over by the water and they started drinking alot.
I realized mama was not there to show them what to do.
They are all resting now and seem at ease.
Just had to show them off.
So please keep your fingers crossed that they all make it.

I don't think they are going back. Our other neighbor is trying to increase his flock and I think he's going to trade her some veggies for them.

The thing is they (the neighbors with the chicks have horses, dogs, goats, geese, emus and llamas and they are all very well taken care of but the chickens are just left to fend for themselves. I believe that's the way they have always had chickens. They never counted on a neighbor that loves chickens.
Their rooster (Russel) got his leg caught in a fence and hung there for about 3 days before anyone noticed he was missing and that was me because he's over here so much. When I mentioned that he had not been over they went looking for and found him. They were going to put him down but I said the leg was not broken and I would take care of him. So we brought him home and taped the leg and kept him for 4 weeks. He's back to his old self now.

Sweet Cheeks: I just noticed where you are. My 89 year old mother and sister live in Yelm and I'm going up next week for my Mom's birthday. I do love to vist there.

Jacie -

It's so nice of you to help out your neighbor with the injured or abandoned chickens.

I would do the same, but would have a hard time giving them back.

For me, I do my best to protect all my pets from harm so they all live happy healthy lives. I would feel guilty otherwise.

I lived in Yelm (Lawrence Lake - Scenic Shores) for a couple years when ex got stationed at Madigan Army Hospital (Fort Lewis) in 1990.

Enjoy your visit to the Pacific NW.

Too bad you couldn't bring those four cuties with you. I'd take them in a heartbeat.

Oh I wish I could bring them to you. I know they would have a good home but Freddie our other neighbor will take good care of them if they will agree to let him have them.
