I have a thread pertaining to her injury already here, but she is basically dead. She is leaking some foul smelly stuff from her vent area, and is totally unrespomsive to everything.
I occasionally see her back rise, so she is still breathing somewhat.
she is limp and cold.

I don't mean to be crass, but could I put her in a plastic bag or should I just wait for DH get get home and cull??

It smells pretty bad in my house b/c of her.....this is my first chick death I have had to deal with, and I don't know where to go from here,
Thank you.

How old is it? If it is under 2 weeks or so, the easiest and fastest method would be to take a sharp pair of shears or scissors and cut off the head. If older than two weeks, you may need a sharp knife to do the same thing. If it is suffering and on it's way out, it would be best to put her down quickly.

We had an 8-9 weeker that our dog got last week and he got that way, laying there, just breathing with his eyes closed. We just kind of held him down and that was all it took to get him to go ahead and pass...it took seconds, and we weren't even firmly holding him down. It's no fun though... sorry for your loss.

Oh-and you might want to go outside to do it...we made the mistake of doing it on our porch floor (which is inside). They make a little mess...

I can't really tell you the best way of doing it. I can tell you that, having read your posts, you should probably avoid trying to break her neck. I tried it once and failed. It was a nightmare and if you don't do it right it's harder than you would ever imagine. I think the disturbance of it would bother you - and her.

Honestly I'd cover her and let your husband do it. She's very peaceful and might actually pass on her own. It sounds like she is.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help. I'd do it for you if I could, but I can't. Sometimes it seems it would be easier if it's not your own bird.

Find a sealable bucket large enough to hold her. Lay her on the bottom. Take a disposable cup and dump in some baking powder. Sit the cup in the bucket. Quickly pour some vinegar into the cup and seal up the bucket fast. The vinegar and baking powder will react and gas the chick.

I've done this with mice. I've never done it with a chick, but I got the idea from here in the first place, so it should work. Depending on how big she is, you might need to use a pretty good amount of baking powder.

Good luck.

Thanks....I do know I couldn't beak her neck either.
Hence the ziploc. I just can't believe she is still breathing...if you can even call it that.
The smell is so bad, I want to put her on the porch....is that bad??? It's not cold but I feel bad. I was holding her earlier and she leaked through the towel all over me.

I lost one this spring... She went on her own though. I simply put her on a warm bed and covered her up... A little while later that was that. So sorry to hear about your loss

ETA: Simply covered her... no suffocation or anything...
