My 11 year old son is getting involved in the local 4H poultry program any suggestions

Any recognized breed that he likes is good. What is more important is to get him started with the best quality birds you can find. If you were signing him up for football, baseball, hockey, etc., you wouldn't skimp on the equipment needed for the sport; in this case don't skimp on the birds needed.

Breeds are very important. You wouldn't want a breed that's know for it's flightiness or aggressiveness.
Some good friendly breeds are,
Silkie
Cochin
Australorp
Pekin
Brahma
Barnevelder
That's all I can think of right now.

Check your local ordinances about keeping chickens if you live in town or the suburbs. Nothing is more disheartening (or expensive) than getting birds, getting attached to them, investing in good stock, food, housing, and medications only to be told that you aren't allowed to have them.

We live on a farm so we don't have to worry about ordinances
Oh good. Hope you weren't offended....so many wonderful people on here are heartbroken when they learn that the chickens they love have to go and I especially hate seeing that when a child is involved. Good luck! Have fun, and be proud. It's a big deal when they want to learn to care for something.

Not offended at all and I am very excited he wants to get involved in this called the extension office today for information they said they would call back next Friday

Yeah good quality birds is what I want for him hard to find here and don't think a hatchery will be good for show quality
