My 1st attempt at hatching my own chix from my own raised chickens.
I have about 25ish Ameracaunas and 25ish mutt chicken eggs (Ameracauna roos and brown leghorn hens and barred rock hens).
Have a forced hot air w/turner incubator.
4 thermometers and a hydrometer installed.
I am using a water wiggler in the center of incubator with an external temp probe.
Hopefully, everything goes well??????!!!!!!

I am aware of temps and humidity, very aware.

Congrats on the hatch attempt. I too am attempting to hatch a few in my incubator. Mine is a still air hobavator and this is my first time. I set mine this afternoon 4/18/10 and I don't know if this is counted as day 1 or tomorrow is.

Hi Pigfarmer, I am also from Maine. I am hatching eggs right now. 3 started tonight, have 3 hatched out already over the weekend. Will be picking up some more eggs to hatch out as soon as these are all finished. It says you are from central maine, did you by chance also place an ad on craigslist about eggs and pigs? It says you are in the town I grew up in. Small world.

I'm in the middle of hatch for my first incubator attempt. I've had chickens for many years, but I always just let the hens do the hard stuff. LOL. I built my own incubator and it's working, I have 4 hatched out from 10 so far. They were a bit early, started hatching Friday night when I wasn't expecting them until tonight or tomorrow.
Good luck with your first attempt, I hope you have great results!

Hi PollyC,
Yes I did, I am from Litchfield.
I have fertile eggs for sale...
This my 1st try with 40+ eggs, of which more than half are Ameraucanas.

Thanx for the support...

doing my first ever hatch attempt too, but i'm relying on my little Silkie Gretel. she really insisted and, since i don't have an incubator, i'm fine with letting her try. she's got 4 standard eggs of mysterious parentage (one is a green egg, so at least one EE) and 3 of her own (2 of which were refrigerated for a day as i was totally shocked that she was trying to set). fingers crossed!

I candled my eggs (46ish) today.

Out of 46(ish), I found 10 to be infertile, rechecked a 2nd time, to possibly have 1 viable one in the 10, and dropped it.

The one that cracked, was indeed a baby peep...but with the shell cracked, I cooked it along with the other nine and fed to
the piglets.
Sooooooooooo, at this point, I have potentially 36 viable eggs to hatch out.

I did have some trouble seeing thru the shell of some from an Ameracauna green shell.
I placed a ? mark and dated it for today (in pencil), to recheck in a few days.

If anyone has a better way to check "dark" shelled eggs, please inform!
