So I'm building an incubator for my Girlfriend's classroom. As a mechanical engineering student I enjoy making things complicated...
So i want to make this incubator affordable, accurate and automatic. This is my basic plan (
) but I'm going to modify a few things.
Here is what I've decided on so far:
Cooler
Craigslist or Freecycle
Cost: Free
2 lights
Have these
Cost: Free
Not sure which of these I'll be using:
waffer style thermostat:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/22-AMP-WAFE...646?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item588aebd246
Cost: $28.00 after shipping
or
Bi-metal mechanical thermostat
http://incubatorwarehouse.com/index...sories/bi-metal-egg-incubator-thermostat.html
Cost: $18.91 after shipping
thermometer/hygrometer:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002J4C8K0?tag=vglnk-c964-20
Cost: $18.58 after shipping
2 CPU Fan
12 Volt 6-8cm off ebay/amazon. Have plenty of 12v inverters.
Cost: ~$2.50 each
Humidifier/Fogger
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mist-Maker-...380?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25670cd9c4 (still trying to track down a free 24v inverter. Suggestions?)
Cost: $3.79 sfter shipping
So basically I need to work out the details on the Humidistat. I've seen many online at ebay... like this ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Honeywell-D...359?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f0ded1ebf ) for about $25 after shipping. Just wondering if there is something out there thats cheaper??? Dont really wanna pay that much for a humidistat that is ultimatly not that important.
Also need a little info on an auto egg turner. I've seen the kits but I'd like to make one. Any ideas on scavaging a cheap low rpm (1/20 or 1/10 rpm)? Also do eggs need to be oriented large side up and rotated 30 degrees (?) left and right of vertical or can they be rolled (
)? Is one way better than another??? I figure I can make either once I find a motor I like.
Thanks for all the info. I've looked over most of the incubators on the BYC page so I know that I am probably making this more difficult than it needs to be but I do enjoy making things. Any suggestions, input or recommendations are greatly appreciated!!!!!
