I know my roo has scaly leg mites, which I am treating him for. When I picked him up this evening (too late for pix) to rub his legs with vasiline, I noticed around his bum is raw and bloody. A place on either side of his bum is bare, no feathers, and bloody. What could it be?? I haven't seen anything on this site described like it before. It is a place about 2 inches across on either side of his bum, I put a thick coating of vasiline on it. I think Neosporin tomorrow?? Could this have anything to do with the mites?

Thanks for any advice you might give.

They may have mites/lice, and the others may have been pecking where these have irritated him. I would check all birds for mites. Do this at night as they are not always actually on the bird during the day. Look for tiny crawling critters or clumps of tiny eggs, around the vents and bases of feathers near the vent, and along the feather shafts in that area. If you see them, there is lots of info on here about how to treat.

Neosporin is fine for wounds. If you are sure there are no mites/lice on any birds, then Neosporin and perhaps separation til he is no longer bloody should work. Then you would have to try to figure out if you need to do something to prevent further pecking.

Let us know if you need more help, of course.
