Right now I have some wood mulch (no cedar) that I'm using for the flooring. I was planning to compost it when I clean. What benefits am I'm going to gain from sand? Never heard of using that.

Extending the eaves is a good idea, not all of the chickens can fit up in the rafters of the roof and those that can't get soaked.
