In the spring of 2019, my obsession began.
What's funny is originally, I didn't want chickens and my sister did, but now she hates them
We did the 4-H chicken thing. But instead of us getting one set and sharing, we each got one, and ended up with 30 chicks running around!
They were too cute!
I got the Red Sex Links, and sister got the Blacks
Well, I must admit they all grew up equally beautiful birds...
Above: Blossom
Caroline, one of the Blacks. She and one of the other Blacks, Kelsey, had rather unusual colors...
Kelsey is the orange girl. The other is Raelynn.
Unfortunately, neither Kelsey nor Caroline nor Raelynn are around anymore. The neighbors got Kelsey and Raelynn, and Caroline had complications.
And now I must talk about Hawk.
Hawk was one of the RSL girls. She was always a bit bigger, and had so much personality. She was also extremely smart. She would always run up to me when I came to the brooder box.
One day, when she was an older chick (semi-feathered) I was refilling the feeder, and it fell on her. I examined her but found no damage.
Later I went back and she ran up to me.... Trailing blood. Her talon on her left foot had been broken off. I separated her and stiffer her so full of food and water she became spoiled
.
She is the queen of the coop - and knows it. She's absolutely huge.... She stands at least a couple inches over the other girls.
She tends to pose for the camera so I have a lot of great pictures of her
She knows her name to, and when you speak to her, she talks back. No joke. And she's LOUD.
Anyway, in case you haven't noticed, she's my favorite girl
Well, after the show girls went to the fair, I couldn't wait. I bought more chickens
11 little chicks. 2 Barred Rocks, 1 silver-lace Wyandotte, 5 welsummers, and my new favorite breed - 3 Easter eggers.
I don't have many pictures of these - just pictures of Jewel.
Jewel as a chick and my Wyandotte (Purl) as a chick we're almost indistinguishable to inexperienced me.
Turns out, Jewel was unusual...
As her feathers grew out...
She was white!
Without a doubt, she's the prettiest girl in the yard.
Unfortunately, her beautiful pure white feathers attracted the other's attentions. Jewel spent a lot of her pullet days in my "hospital" in the basement. But thanks to that, I have the same bond with her that I do with Hawk.
And now she hangs out with the others comfortably!
Well, this spring I did the 4-H chickens for the last time. I got 15 RSL pullets.. and later bought five ameracaunas:
Bunny
Keelie (who lays PINK EGGS!
)
The elusive Chocolate
The other two, Blue Jr. and Americano, are a bit camera shy... But they're my best layers at the moment, so that's ok.
In the midst of all these lovely layers, I have/used to have three mating pairs.
I had two Silkies: Yuta and Doodle. Yuta died of a brain injury, and Doodle got got by the same dogs that got Kelsey and Raelynn.
They sure were cute, though.
The next pair are my turkeys, Aquila and Priscilla (Acts 18:18)
He's a feisty stinker, but she's an angel.
The next pair are a couple of Seramas, Woozi (the rooster) and Miki (the hen)
They are extremely camera shy - human shy too.
Here is the only picture I have of them! They didn't know I was there so I got a pic real fast
Miki is the cream with speckles, and Woozi is the orange gold with the black tail. The orange hen is Keelie and the red hen is Tae Tae.
I spend all my free time with these girls and boys.
I've been blessed with 32 chickens and 2 turkeys who leave me three nests full of eggs
(They never lay in the fourth nest
)
I get so many eggs every day, it's insane sometimes
I hope you enjoyed my little talk about my girls! I could go on for pages and pages about my girls and boys and how awesome chickens are, but I'll stop here and spare you
Thanks for taking the time to read this!
