Hi Folks!

I am about a year and a half into my chickenkeeping journey and I have noticed that my dominant hen is also the most submissive to me. She is the definite leader of the pack... mounting the other hens and even attempting to crow here and there. But whenever I come into the backyard, she goes into submissive position even if she is halfway across the yard.

Is this normal in your experience?

All 4 of our hens do it as well lol including the alpha hen. One of them tends to run away more than just give in but if you manage to get close to her she'll also do that

Mine is too, and oh boy, I have another hen that likes to attack me and I have to gently give her a little boot back every now and again. When I do, my sweet top hen gives her a serious what for...as in grabs her by the back of the neck and holds her down for a sec or two as if to say don't mess with the boss! I thought for a while, that my mean one, was top hen, but then began to notice that no, my sweet Cuckoo is head hen, just is very patient until she is not!

My top hen just loves hanging out with me! She is by far the most friendly of the flock towards me and follows me around when I'm outside and the flock is free ranging. She actually waits for me to sit down on the patio so she can jump in my lap. She will sit with me until I get up. It's weird because I never handled them much when they were chicks so it's a little strange how friendly and attached she is to me. She won't sit with anyone else. I'm her chosen one! lol
