Back story. 7 month old blue splash Amerauca. Was laying about every other day. Escaped about 10 days ago and a neighbor had to get her out of the road and put her back on my property. She laid a normal egg late that night about 10 days ago. Then no eggs or nesting till today. Then she laid a normal egg, left the nest, and, while singing the egg song laid another with a very soft shell! During these 10 days, behavior is normal, eating and drinking, free ranging, foraging. five years I have not seen this! Any opinions? Thanks!
Soft egg on the left.

That's not horribly unusual. Occasionally a hen will accidentally release two yolks instead of one. If they are released at the same time you might get a double yolked egg. If they are released apart in time she can lay two eggs in one day. That happens more often with pullets or really old hens but can happen to any hen. We are all allowed an occasional oops as long as it is not habit forming.

The reason the second egg is often soft is that the hen makes a limited amount of shell material for a day. Most is usually used on the first egg so there may not be enough for the second egg.
