I have seven lovely chicks - 3 black australorps, and 4 RIR, and they're just 3wks old. Because it's beautifully warm here, I decided to move them to the coop early, and it's working out well.

Their coop has two levels, with a small ladder going up to an enclosed loft, where they're more sheltered and cozy. They have been popping out in the mornings on their own, and going "downstairs" to start their day, but at dusk, they would huddle together down by the door.

That is, until this night , when the sun began to set , they all found their way up to the loft, and settled in - on their own ! Smart little girls , I'm so proud of them !

These are my first chickens ever, and I find they are full of surprises, and a constant source of amusement ! I'm so glad I took the plunge, and joined the many "chicken people" here !

Isn't it amazing how our fuzzy-butts figure things out? You sound like me....an enthusiastic new chicken mommy...!!

I would be so proud too! (I go nuts over them sleeping on their perches and tucking their little beaks in their wings at 3 weeks!)

Can you get pictures of them in their loft? Would love to see it! Yes, I confess I am a Chick Pic addict.

Yes , I'm beginning to understand how lots of folks become "addicted". And I will try and get a shot of them in the "loft" !

An added benefit I've found is, because I have a walk-in coop, I'm able to put a milk crate in there, and just hang with the birds, while they do their delightful chicken antics ! This has proven to be a most serene pastime - takes the stress right out !

You make a good point - I don't have a coop yet, but I will go through some major withdrawal if I can't sit and watch them!

I usually watch the chicks for quite awhile before I head to bed (and other various points in the day)- it is a very natural de-stresser, the beauty of nature in action - and they make you laugh!

Funny you mentioned that...I just got through sitting outside watching my teenager ladies out in their little makeshift run of sorts. I could spend all afternoon with them but have things that need attending to. Such a delight! Watching them in total silence like that you get to "know" each one individually as to their personalities...love them!!

I do the same thing! Sometimes I put a towel down and sit on the ground so I'm closer to them and they can jump up on me.
