So I just lost 4 easter egger bantams that I had shipped from Ohio. Now I have a baby brahma that is doing the EXACT same thing that they did, stretching out her little neck and gasping for air. What the heck is going on? Did she catch something maybe? I dont know what to do, Im afraind Im going to lose her just like my bantams. Is this what happens when they get weak? She was fine last night. She still gobbles down tiny meal worms and I started everyone one on duramycin because one chick is making crackling sounds when she breathes. This thing is only about a week old. Im giving her electrolytes and love. I dont know what to do. Anyone have any input????

Wow Ive never heard of that one. I almost wonder if she had an impacted crop. The area where the crop is was pretty bulgy and hard as a rock. I gave her a little olive oil and massaged it, it seemed to go down a bit, but Im not sure if thats what the problem actually is. Thanks for responding, I'll so some more research.

Well I pulled her out of the brooder, Ive been holding her ever since I got home, which is like over four hours now. Now I have her sleeping on a heating pad, she is not gasping as much. I wonder if the pine shavings created too much dust or perhaps she ate some (?) which may have contributed to an impactedb crop and breathing difficulties (?). I've never had a problem with shavings before but another chick I got at the same time developed a raspy chirp and a crackling breathing sound that I didnt notice before. Ive been buying different brands of shavings so I wonder if this particular one has smaller particles. I just read some posts on pine shavings and decided to vacuum out the brooder and put a towel in for tonight. Tomorrow Im going to get some sand and try that. What do you guys think? I already named my little brahma Sally, so Im really hoping she pulls thru, I can stand to lose another one.

Crud as soon as I posted that she started gasping again, I dont know if she will make it thru the night. Im so bummed out. Im hearing a bit of a gurgling noise too.........

I'm sorry.

Hopefully the necropsy will give you the answers you need. I had one with similar symptoms at one point. I ended up having my dad cull him for me because he was so miserable looking. I never figured out what was wrong. (I didn't have anything done with him though.) I hope your other babies thrive and lay you lots of eggs. :)
Let me know what the results are.
