My baby Buff Orpingtons arrived today!!

Here they are! They all made it, except one looks a little roughed up. He/she looks a little pecked on the back of the neck and has poop stuck to the vent which I will clean.

How can I tell which are the roosters and which are the hens? Or do I have to wait a little longer?

You'll have to wait awhile before you can tell if they are he's or she's.

Did you order them from a hatchery? If so, did you get straight runs, pullets, or cockerels?

Yay, baby buffs! They're so cute now, but in a week or so you have have a mob of hooligans on your hands!

Question re: the chick that looked a little rough...I tried cleaning the vent. I can see the vent is clear but there is a little something stuck in the feathers that I can get out. I used a paper towel and warm water. Should I try something else?

Also, his/her head looks rough because the other chickens are pecking at her. I've heard of pecking order, but can they do a lot of harm? How should I handle this?

If it's just in the feathers I wouldn't worry about it. It will fall out when the fluff goes away. As for telling the roos from the pullets at this age, my pullets always seemed to feather out faster than the roos. The pullets would have noticeable wing feathers going before the roos got started. Just my experience...

There are few things cuter than baby BOs

They can harm one another by pecking... keeping them under a red light will help, as will making sure they have plenty of room in the brooder.

Awesome! They didn't mark the males for you? Maybe they will be very obvious little guys.

As for the Pasty Butt, you can use a warm, moist paper towel or washcloth and clean it off. Make sure it is getting plenty of water and eating like the rest. Sometimes when they are picked on, they won't eat like they should.
