My bantam roosters spurs are long and splintered what do I do?

I have a pet rooster I rescued about 3 years ago. He has 2 long spurs that he loves to kick at things and sometimes strangers with. I was stupid and read to use pliers. So I removed just a bit at the tip but it splintered. He didn't seem bothered though. There must be an easier way for an amateur????
