I had an Old English bantam hen. She was so sweet and only 6 months old or so. She kept flying out of the yard area... She was laying her eggs up by our house instead of the coop. It took me a while to figure out what she was doing. She'd wander around the property and head back to the coop randomly. I didn't even know she was doing it for weeks. Then started to notice a pattern. Yesterday I couldn't find her and was worried. I swore when I found her I was going to clip her wing. Of course I didn't last night when she appeared from under the bushes out front. This morning I was outside a little later than normal... I kept looking and looking... then heard a rustling on the side of the house and saw a hawk fly away. There was my little Lo ... I won't go into the gory details. But I'm so sad. I had to share with someone. No one really understand how I feel. Thankfully my 2 1/2 yo son was distracted and didn't see it all. I did tell him Lo went bye-bye. He was sad and kept saying "Lo bye-bye?" I cannot stop crying. I wasn't raised in the country and these chickens have become such pets to me. Really the best pets I've ever had. I'm a huge dog lover, but really chickens are wonderful, sweet pets. I'm hoping this helps me mourn a bit. Glad I can come here and vent about my sadness.
RIP Lo...

I think if my bantams got killed my hubby would lay down in the floor crying he loves those little stinkers, though I find them a bother. He takes them treats and runs off the bigger hens so the treats all go to the baby's. I can't believe how flipped he is over those banties.
So sorry your lo is gone...I used to enjoy watching the hawks now I have a true hate for them.

I let the girl free range in the evening, but I stay with them... but Lo would get out on her own. It's my fault... I should have clipped her wing. Yes, would baby that little bantam too:) The bigger girls would bully her a little & I'd distract them to make sure she got treats;) Such cute personalities. Different than the RIR's I have. Who I love very much as well and I am making myself sick that I don't have an aviary net over the yard right now... I will have one before next week! Yes, I hate hawks too...
