Me and my husband don't understand what could have happened to Henrietta, our Barred Rock. I let the chickens free range Sunday afternoon and she was just fine and running around with everyone else. She was alive and sitting in a nest box when I closed the coop up for the night. Yesterday morning when I went out there to do my usual chores, she was in the same place dead. What could have happened? She was only a little over a year old. She had crippled looking feet that she always had, so I don't know if she just wasn't very healthy to begin with. She had just laid an egg a day or two before. We were thinking maybe she might have eaten something when she was out. We just don't know. She was a very sweet chicken and it is sad that she is gone. When I had to bury her yesterday, I kept it together until I had to put the dirt over her.

And I know barred rocks are such sweet, quirky, inquisitive birds that you can really grow so attached to. Based on what you've described, it's just so hard to tell what could have happened. But when a bird hasn't been showing signs of illness and dies pretty suddenly, I always assume an internal issue, like maybe the heart. At least she spent her last day enjoying life, out and pecking about...a good chicken life.

So sorry for your loss. These things sometimes just happen. Chickens are masters at disguising any health problems they have until they are on death's door or beyond. It sounds like it may have been a reproductive issue, which is not uncommon in young layers. Unfortunately, there is not much you could have done.

Sorry.

I am so sorry for your loss; I have two barred rock about the same age as yours (Chickie and Desi) and they are wonderful birds. It is distressing when there's no clear reason why they died. Much love to you and your flock!
