I have Pekin duck eggs hatching this weekend. 5 of them to be exact. Well I was reading on here about the wet mess ducks can make and how people have used bathtubs and shower stalls as brooders for their chicks so why not ducks. I am sure its been done for duckies but I haven't seen it yet. lol

So today I decided to get the brooder ready for their arrival.

I made their water supply out of a milk jug with holes cut into it and duct tape to make them smaller while they are little. I cut them to big and I saw how others have had their babies get into the jug or bottle.

So smaller they went.

So here are my pics of what I created today for the little ones.

So started with the empty tub

Then made panels for the top. There are 2 so one can be removed without having to take off the whole thing. I placed them on the higher ledge so the cats can't reach down inside to get the babies. Yes I am paranoid

Used the leftover chicken wire that was of no use anymore to secure the front area. This area also slides open so I can get into the tub without having to step over it.
The water is by the drain and the food near that. I also used some of the non slip stuff for under carpets that I ran through the washing machine to clean it up. Placed a big bulky towel on the bottom to keep them away from the cold tub and covered with another thinner towel to help keep the thicker one cleaner longer.

I am just waiting on my heat lamp to come in the mail. Should be here on Thursday. I am using the ceramic heating element as the bathroom gets light throughout the entire day.

Thanks for looking. Hope you like it.

looks really good. Make sure you keep the rubber liner down so they have a sure grip.

But I have to ask....

where will you bathe?

I have a shower upstairs. I never really use the tub that much. I think my dogs get more use out of it than I do. It holds more water than I have in my hot water tank so it takes forever to fill it.

I must confess I used my upstairs bathtub also. We were getting ready to replace the tub anyhow because it leaked. I will tell you they will turn it into a nasty mess, but since yours still works I think it would be perfect. When you want them to have a swim just fill it up. You don't even have to remove the ducks.

I have 13 Indian runners due to hatch in a week and a half and then another 13 a week and a half after that! I have my incubator set up on the step going up to my soaker tub. So using the tub is just the next step away!!

I have a detached shower in the same bathroom. So we all can stay clean!
