My beautiful d'Uccle roo was almost killed by a dachsund

Cinnamon was not happy about being bred. But she didn't buck him off, either. I'm hoping that's a good sign!

I am so sorry. I can feel your pain seeing that my parents own a Dachshund and he has attacked several of my chickens.

What I did for my Silkie when she got attacked (She got it twice...stupid dog.) was I put her in a box in the bathroom with some warm towels to snuggle up with. If she had any minor bite wounds I would clean them out with warm water. Both times she was in shock so she seemed lethargic but I offered her some electrolyte water and a little food and kept her in the bathroom where it was quiet. The next morning she was usually perky and alert. I just kept the wounds clean and made sure they didn't get infected.

Dachshunds are such pests when it comes to chickens! I cant stand it!

I've been following up on this thread from the start. I'm so very happy to hear that your boy is feeling better! You're too lucky your d'Uccle is people friendly. Our roo isn't very happy about people contact at all. And he's went after my little brother in the past.

Not sure what to make of him. He's too far gone and sadly, has taken to the anti-social side of the flock. Oh well. He's still very pretty, though.

I'll leave you his irritated pic on a good note.

I hope he makes his girls and you very happy. What a sweet little thing!

Princess I am soooo very happy my boy isn't like yours!
Even when he's feeling cocky my boy's pretty good. Only time he's ever been aggressive with me I was wearing a red & purple sweater. He tried to tear it off me! Grabbed it at my wrist and shook it like a dog. So I never wear that sweater in the yard any more!

I have loved and cuddled these since the moment they hatched. Even took them to GA to visit my niece as week-old chicks!
The Silkie they were raised with was as mean as your millie roo. We re-homed him. Don't know why birds all raised the same way ended up so different, but they did.

I would

if Tennessee didn't

me anymore!
But I don't think there's any danger of that. Not as long as he remembers where his bread is coming from

Thanks. Nepolean is an angry little guy but he is prettier than my mean ol' Silkie, that's for sure!

Last year my mean Silkie over-threw my d'Uccle and had beaten him into submission. I told Daddy that he needed to be separated and he told me they'd work it out.

Late that night, I went to close everyone up for the night and I found Nepolean outside, beaten to a bloody pulp. I'm talking, swolen eye, all of the feathers above his neck, and all of his skin either ripped off or totally covered in blood. I could smell him from a few feet away. He was unable to sit up and didn't make any noise. Of course, Daddy refused to home him inside and I was forced to keep him out.

The next day the skin was only slightly scabbed over. Nepolean seemed reluctant to leave the safety of the roost, even to eat. My sweet little Sultan roo was now going after him, also. Nepolean lost his flock and all respect. He was a total mess, to make matters worse.

The only thing I could do for him was let him free range while everyone else was in the run. It was enough for a while and he learned to recover.

He's now a lower ranking roo. Our Sultan recently passed away and I hatched my Polish hen's chick, who was Nep's son. His son truely takes over his character. Angry as a bull and a demonic glare to boot! Just like daddy!

We have horrible luck with the boys here. The Sultan was my favorite.

You're lucky you can re-home your males. The only people who'd want mine are the ones who'd like some mean-roo-soup.

And that's a no for me. But if there's one thing my mean d'Uccle can do, it's make a VERY pretty son!

Oh, and bread? The only thing I can do to win Nepolean's heart, even temporarily, is give him a banana. I swear, he can down the whole fruit in minutes.
