My beautiful Mary Catherine...RIP...You are loved !!

Yesterday My beloved Mary Catherine died. She was an 8 year old Buff Orpington and head hen of my little flock. She did not go down to the orchard yesterday morning with the others, but rested instead under the redwood tree. I found her a couple of hours later.

She was sweet, beautiful and carried herself with great grace. We are all missing her, perhaps me most of all. My tears come and go today....I know you know what that is like.

I'm so very sorry. She was lovely. Lost my own head hen here recently, too, though she didn't make it to her 6th hatchday. RIP, Mary Catherine.

I'm very sorry for your loss. What a beautiful bird she was. When I lost my Kathy Jane (we just called her 'Jane' some time later, not sure what breed she was though) back in 2008 (she was nearly nine years old), I cried just about all day. Many heartfelt sympathies.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and your support. I would like to think it gets easier to lose a favorite hen, but I don't think it ever will.

We will bury her next to Greta, my first hen who died in my arms at 14.
