My black Australorp rooster has a dime size open wound on his back

Where exactly is the wound? It looks pretty swollen.
It's right behind his right wing on his back. The other rhode island red girls pecked it back open. It had a large thick scab. That is why I thought they wouldnt bother it. It had no sign of blood and black like his feathers.

UPDATE on Gilbert: After it scabbed over and he had been locked up for 5 days I had to let him out to clean his cage. I thought he would be ok for that short of a time. Again I underestimated my rhode island red girls. They hadn't forgot and picked the scab. I crated him again and waited for a new scab. I found the pine tar at tsc. I expected it to be stinkier and thicker. It smell just like pine to me and has the consistency of syrup. I put some on and put him back in the crate hoping it would dry. Next morning when I checked him it didn't look quite dry. When I let him out to see if they girls would leave him alone the same thing happened. One girls pecked off the scab AGAIN! I guess I'm going to have to leave him crated till it is completely healed. :( Can anyone tell me how long that will take?

It can take 6 weeks for wounds to heal. Do you see any difference in the wound? Just being away the the flock for so long, they are going to continue to attack him. He will need to be reintroduced to them gradually, perhaps in a dog crate with food and water, next to them in the crate.

They aren't really attacking him. There are a couple who wont leave him alone. They are like that with my boo boos too. And heaven forbid if I have a band aid one. lol . He is and has been in a dog crate inside the coop with the others so he wouldnt be alone, and yes it does look like it has been healing. He had a chunk of skin the size of a dime missing on Dec 6. Then a week later I thought they wouldn't mess with it since it wasn't bleeding and was black like his feathers. And someone pecked it open again. Then a couple weeks more being in the crate I let him out to clean the cage and they did it again but not as bad. Finally got pine tar, and that didn't work either. He is my favorite of the two roos. He is always sharing food and treats with the girls before he will even eat them. My red roo is not like that at all.

Wish I new what to do about my black rooster. Dec 6 he had a wound on his side. When it healed I let him back out. Then the same thing happened again. Couple hens pecked it in the same spot. So i crated him again in the coop until it healed. I let him out last night before bedtime. He has been out all day. I just found the same spot pecked open again! Should I buy "peepers" for all of them so they don't peck him?
