This is the design I've come up with for my brooder
(trust me it looks better the way I sketched it. This was a quickie using MS Paint)

The brown is the wooden box.
The black shading is where there will be mesh/screen
the silver lines show where there will be glass
the red round rectangles are hinges
the red pentagons are latches.

It's designed so that the glass opens down in the front and the screened lid opens on top. It also has screened sides.
The back and bottom are solid, though I'm trying to construct a way to add in a removable tray bottom for easier cleaning.

I've got a price list of the different materials I could use to build this from my hardware store (It's MUCH cheaper to have them cut me a piece of glass then plexiglass)
But I want your opinion on what kind of wood/mesh to use.

Also I want your opinion on dimensions. I'm going to keep it indoors so nothing too large.

And ny other constructive criticism or input you feel you can share to help me along my building quest

Theres only me. No man around to help me (except the guys at the hardware store) so I'm going to be cutting and putting this thing together alone. Luckily my boss has allowed me to borrow his power tools (GASP! A woman using Power Tools!) just please keep any further ideas simple.

THANKS!

My indoor brooder is similar to that. I made mine out of a plywood shipping crate and used the top part of a wooden storm door for the flip down front. My box is solid and I have a 12"x12" hole for the heat lamp to sit on the top. I also have a 6"x16" hole cut in the top for ventilation. Both holes are covered with 1/4" hardware cloth. My box measures 48"wx36"dx18"h.

Well, I went and bought the materials today.

3/8 cdx plywood
liquid nails
wood nails
wood screws
1/2" hardware mesh (couldn't find 1/4")
hinges
latches

Haven't bought the glass yet. I'll buy it last so that I can make sure it's cut right.

I'll post progress photos and the finished piece
