Hello,

Just wanted to post a little bit about our new ducklings :)

I called tractor supply yesterday morning (for the 4th day in a row hah) and they finally said they had ducklings! A friend of mine and I headed there after work I intended to pick up 2 or 3 not knowing till we got there that you have to buy 6 or more at a time (oh darn :-p). So I ended up with way more cuties than I intended but I mean, I wouldn't necessarily call that a bad thing :-D

Here's a run down on my brooder. It's a 2x3 dog crate with cardboard draft protection along the edges which I lined with painters plastic for easy clean up. Thank goodness I did that because, since I'm feeding moist fermented feed, they're really flinging the stuff. They really love it though and have been gobbling it down.

I'm using a human heating pad under one corner of the brooder with a box over that area for heat and so they feel secure. I have it set on high (cvs brand) and use a thermal heat sensing gun to gauge the temperature which is between 90-97 with 4 layers of paper towels on the floor of it. They seem extremely content in there, and I feel better not having a heat lamp to worry about. I'll just upgrade the size of the box as they grow.

We got 2 Pekin, 2 Swedish, a feisty little Rouen runt with what looks like a crest on the side of its head and a khaki campbell. These ducks represent the sweet beginnings to our little homestead.
