This is just a cardboard box that was given to us by a neighbor. I love it- works great and is very easy to clean, and move as needed.
The bottom is filled with pine shavings for $4 a bag, changed out twice a week. Dries poop and keeps it odor-free for the most part. Part of the top is covered with hardware cloth, so the chicks can't fly out as they grow and the heat lamp won't fall. The heat lamp is 100 watt and is set up on a microphone stand, perfect for raising and lowering it. There is one waterer and one feeder in there, the waterer is placed on a dog bowl. There is one stuffed animal, just being soft and without anything fuzzy to get the chick's beaks caught on. There are two paper towels on top of the shavings under the heat lamp to sprinkle food on and for the chicks to sleep on if there isn't room on the animal. Very, very easy to clean.
--Expenses--
-Feeder and waterer- $10.00
-Shavings- $4.00
-Heat lamp- $8.00
Here are some pictures with my Delawares, turning two weeks old tomorrow.
Here I took the hardware cloth off for a better picture of the interior.
Tomorrow we will be tearing down the right side of the brooder and adding another box the same size to it. It is very easy to do, and with the chicks growing it's becoming a tad crowded in there.
