Ok I am bragging just a little (as though I had something to do with it) but my two white cochin broodies have successfully adopted 14 three-week old chicks! They’re now fully integrated into the full flock and doing well. Based on what I’ve read here, it seemed like a crap shoot, but hey why not try? The broodies had been setting for nearly six weeks at the time, so they were ready for babies. The mamas adopted them quickly, but some of the babies took a few days to accept the mamas. After a week in the broody house, they joined the flock during the day and slept separately from the main coop for three days. On day four, I closed up the broody house and everyone went into the big coop together. Gotta love a Cochin mama!!
