"Mellow" our broody bantam was overnight attacked and now looks like Pinhead from the movie Hellraiser! :( I am in Rural Victoria, Australia so I can't get any neosporin, like I have heard works good, but the patch on the top of my poor bird's head is bloody and oozing and I don't want her to get infected. I have isolated her from the 3 other birds, and feed her and make sure she has water (and drinks) she gets meal worms as well. Aside of betadine what should I use to help heal her 5cent size patch wound? I have been told to just rub dirt on it, but I'm not so sure thats the most sanitary way of dealing with a scabbing agent. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I am new to this , thanks

Any topical antibiotic or antiseptic is fine, whether sold for people or animals. No, I wouldn't use dirt. The only precaution is, don't use one that has a "caine" drug in it, such as cetacaine, benzocaine, etc. "Neosporin" is used so comonly here that the word is probably used sometimes to mean "antibiotic ointment." Just use whatever is sold there.

If you use Betadine or peroxide, dilute them well first. These are great for an initial clansing. However, both also destroy new skin cells to a degree, so are probably not the best after the first day.

Mellow our broody is doing Much better, scabbed up now & is not shaking any more, she's been out (separate from the other birds) and dirt bathing away from the tractor we isolated her in. Good to see my broody pecked girl kinda back to her normal self(baldness aside) I will be taking note to separate them earlier when this behaviour occurs in the future & will take note as we'll not to use any creams or meds with "Caine" family in them, I was an RDA in the states, so I do have a medical background, thanks again for the advice
