My daughter noticed our Buff Orpington was limping last night. We scooped her up and checked her leg. I don’t see any visible marks/injuries. Maybe a bit of swelling.

I extended her leg and she didn’t behave as if she was in pain. Any idea what it could be? Or suggestions on what to do? We just brought her in the house.

It appears the third toe on the right foot toe nail has broken off just in front of the base, likely causing inflammation in the nail bed. Soak it in 100F water with Epsom salt and Betadine for twenty minutes. Then try to scrape any dirt away from the nail bed that remains after soaking. Then take another photo of it, trying to get a well focused picture of that toe tip. Also nudge the nail to see if it happens to be loose. It may need to be removed if very loose.

I put her in a warm bath with epsom salt for about 20 minutes and then wiped her foot good with a face cloth, then sprayed it with blue kote. Nothing looked bad, I didn’t see any scabs or anything. I will have to catch her again and check that toe nail. When I checked it last night it didn’t seem to be loose. She is in the garage hanging out on a bale of straw.
