I just have to share my buff orpington experience.. So when I decided to get chickens I kept trying to find the most sociable and friendly chicken and I kept seeing buff orpingtons being called friendly and even referred to as the golden retriever of chickens, so I decided I would get some of these lovely birds. well my original plan of getting chicks got delayed when a friend of mine offered me some of her hens that are already laying. she had one buff orp. and I was most excited for her. well now I have had these hens for almost a month and Lorraine, my buff orp. is the sassiest chicken of them all. I love her a lot for this reason but I just have to say that she is NOT the mellow, attention loving hen I was hoping for. she runs up to me and ALWAYS expects me to have some kind of treat for her. she is super quick and steals treats from the other girls. she is hilarious to watch and a joy to have in my coop. My cochin Jetta, also pictured with Lorraine is my sweet chicken. she lets me hold her and pet her so I did get my nice chicken.. just not my buff orpington. well that's my rant.. I'd love to hear about everyone else's chickens!

I have three buffs, all of which sit comfortably at the bottom of the pecking order. They couldn't really get more calm to be honest. On occasion they do get riled up when the other chickens get excited, but they Buffs are usually all snuggled in the corner of the coop sunbathing while the other chickens are out and about. Very sweet birds, very calm and friendly. I guess it just depends on the bird. Some buffs are mellow while others aren't so mellow...as long as you like them, that is all that counts.
