I had to go to Korea last week, so I left my birds with plenty of food and water......and a red heat lamp on in the pen ceiling just to keep'em comfty. Well, got back this past Sunday, and had eggs all over the place......prolly 20 or so. Out of 49, about 40% are females, and had seen one breeding episode the evening before I left. Been gathering 6 or 7 eggs every evening since. I really didn't expect the frinzy to start this early, but I guess the longer daylight hours plus the heat lamp is driving the urge. It's still cold here.......matter of fact calling for significant snow here tonight/tomorrow morning. And what's even stranger, the calling has gotten full blown amongst all of them.......even the males doing their distinct call early in the morning and late in the evening. So, looks like I've got to get moving on doing some seperating a lot quicker than I thought. Is this normal for the mating activity to start this early......still in the dead of winter? Two weeks ago, they were acting a lot layed back compared to this week. Since it's so cold still, I think I'm gonna try pickling some of these eggs especially this early in the game. How long can I keep them (in a cool environment) before they're too old to pickle?

Wow Lucky... I would think that yes the heat plus the extended lighting caused this.. You could try cutting out the light and seeing if that breaks them.. I would think that you can keep the eggs in the fridge for a few weeks...

I always have 20+ eggs waiting for my return from Korea.
I go to Korea, I return home and EGGS!

Just kidding.

Not sure what species of birds you have, but if you are talking about coturnix, then it is logical that given the right amount of food/water and light. One would find eggs. (around 6 weeks)

I proceed from a false assumption.

Bob white are seasonal layers.
Cotuornix will lay yearround with extra light.
Are you sure they are bobwhite's?

The bobwhites do mature a lot slower then cotournix and will not lay eggs as fast as a cotournix,.
I had bobwhites last year because of the nice bob white sound they make. and techno sound they make but the thing I did not like about them is that it took a long time to get a egg.
That's why I like the cotournix better. They taste better then bob whites and they are great layers. that's what I think.

Do you have pictures of your birds?

I prolly have 60+ eggs so far. Just went down there, and there's a big pile in the corner. I didn't bother to gather them......I'll get'em tomorrow. And yes, it's still winter..........spose to snow tonight!!

You have some nice looking bob whites there.

I got 4 eggs today from a friend, bob white and I 'm going to put them in the incubator tomorrow. I hatch out some last year of my own but I let them go in the fall.
I hope they come back in my woods this spring. We will see.

Thanks for sharing

Thank You! I'm really hooked on these Bobs. I just started the quail thing. back mid-summer with these being 6-8 week old chicks. Started out with 50, and only lost two.......(and gained another member in my yard about 2 months ago / my backwoods neighbor raises them and releases them to sell hunts, and I guess mine called it up to visit......and I caught it.....LOL). Anyway, I just ordered an egg turner and quail egg racks a few minutes ago, and in the midst of building and incubator. I'm ready to multiply the family!!!!! Come on Spring...
