I was gardening today when I noticed my chickens had made their way into an area of our yard that I had fertilized with Osmocote which they started eating. I quickly guided them to a safe area of the yard so I don't think they ate very much of the fertilizer. Can Osmocote hurt the chickens? Can the Osmocote poison their eggs? My second question is that I have 5 of 6 birds that are missing feathers and have red areas, not bloody, more sunburned areas of skin or the skin is just bare of feathers. The birds are rarely in the sun as their huge coop gives them lots of shade if and when we do receive sun here in Enumclaw, WA. I have tried coating them with all sorts of stuff to stop the feather pulling but nothing works. Their egg production continues and they seem pretty happy but I am still concerned about this feather pulling. Any thoughts? I am new to this chicken mothering so any advice is greatly appreciated!

I would keep an eye on them for the next couple of days, as for the eggs, i would throw away the eggs for atleast 10 days just to be on the safe side.
For their missing feathers, i use http://www.petvetsupply.com/remmtdl002.html , or you can use Bluekote that you can find at your local feed store.

perhaps increase their protein levels if they are picking they may be trying to supplement! toss them some dry cat food for a treat it will give them a boost.
