hi. my BLRW pullet twisted/broke her knee when she was flying off her roost.(i have since then lowered there roosts so it doesnt happen again. she wobbles when she walks but i think it is gettin worse. the guineas dont help because she has to run and she falls and hurts it even worse. i would like to help her. like maybe put her in a cast or something. ive bandaged up a golden comet with a broken toe before and it good as knew now and would love to help her. she is the prettiest BLRW ive ever seen. i also would like to know where to bandage her up at like around her leg and over a wing or something(if you know what im saying. PLEASE help. i want to fix it before the calcium makes it permantly grow like that!!!! PLEASE HELP !!!!!!!!!

number one... what do you mean by knee??? is it the hock.. If it were mine... I would probably try too... Splint it and tape it best you can and bring her inside... Feed her antibiotics to prevent infection and Vitamin C for pain. I would try to stabilize the leg and not let her move around too much for a couple weeks and then i would put her in a rabbit hutch by herself till it looked like she was mending... not returning her to the flock until at least 6 weeks. You can actually make a sling for her like a johnny jump up... even using a chicken diaper and bungy.... So if the leg has to be straight then she isn't laying on it furthering the problem.

If you need to immobilize her leg, I would use a tongue depressor stick & some vet wrap. The smooth stick(brace) would need to extend from 2 inches above the injury to 2 inches below it.

Actually, wrap the brace with the vet wrap first, then place it on her leg & make a few go arounds with the vet wrap. Then keep an eye on it for swelling and to make sure there is still circulation.

You can not wrap it tightly to her leg. Just enough to immobilize it.

This is vet wrap.

Just a note on vet wrap, as a horse owner, and full time barn worker...be very careful not to wrap the vet wrap too tight...can't stress this enough! It is very stretchy and very easy to cut off circulation by wrapping too tight. I have seen horses go very lame from being wrapped too tight. Unroll the vet wrap before you start wrapping so you aren't pulling it tight on the chickens leg as you unroll the vet wrap from the roll.
Put her on stall rest so she doesn't injure it any further.

thanks everyone. i have a little bit of vet wrap believe it or not and i will put her in a cage out in the coop with maybe her rooster buddy. shes still and pullet and hes still a cockeral so he doesnt mate so im gonna try that. thanks so very much for your help. im off to help her now.
